Useful Information

Please see below for answers to some commonly asked questions. If you require any more information, please Contact Us.

Do I need a referral?

You do not need a referral to access outpatient hand therapy or physiotherapy services as a private patient. Workcover, Third Party, Department of Veteran’s Affairs (DVA) or Extended Primary Care (EPC) patients do require a referral.

For inpatient services, your treating specialist or surgeon will refer you to Extend and these costs are usually included as part of your hospital stay.  Please check with your private health insurer if unsure.

What should I bring to my first therapy appointment?

  • referral letter from your treating surgeon/specialist or GP if you have one
  • any x-rays you may have had done
  • your claim number if you making a claim through WorkCover or Third Party insurance
  • any questions you have related to your injury/condition.

Is my hand therapy/physiotherapy covered by Medicare?

Normally no. Some patients with "chronic conditions" may be eligible to claim a percentage of their consultation through Medicare as part of an Extended Primary Care (EPC) plan. You will need to discuss your eligibility with your GP, who can refer you if appropriate.

Is my hand therapy/physiotherapy covered by my private health insurance?

If you have the appropriate “extras” cover you may be able to claim reimbursement for your consultation and any custom made splints, casts or aids. HICAPS is available for on the spot claims for your consultation cost, but you may need to present a receipt/referral letter to your health fund to claim reimbursement on any other items. Please contact your private health insurer to clarify your level of cover for occupational therapy (most hand therapy services) and physiotherapy if you are unsure regarding your cover.
